Selidiki.com, Jakarta – The Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Perry Warjiyo finally revealed the basic reason for his party wanting to issue digital rupiah after all this time there had been paper rupiah.
Perry explained. For now there are three reasons for us, why this digital rupiah must and really needs to be launched or issued. The first point is because Bank Indonesia (BI) is the only institution or agency that is given the mandate and authority to issue currency in Indonesia.
This Rule has been regulated and written in Law Number 7 of 2011 concerning Currency. With the existence of this law, other digital currencies besides the rupiah are not legal in Indonesia to be used as a means of transaction.
“Because Bank Indonesia (BI) is the only state institution that is in accordance with the law that has the authority and has the right to issue digital currency in Indonesia, we call it digital rupiah, the others are not legal,” Perry said at the Meniti Jalan Toward Digital Rupiah event. , Monday (5/12/2022).
The second reason, Perry continued, is that Bank Indonesia (BI) wants to serve all levels of society according to the growing demographics. According to him, in the next few years, the use of digital rupiah will dominate in Indonesia because the majority of the population is the millennial generation.
“The 60% are millennials, especially our children and grandchildren, they are our children who need digital payment instruments. So this is the second reason for Bank Indonesia (BI),” said Perry. Third Perry emphasized that the reason for issuing digital rupiah was to facilitate international cooperation in the use of digital currencies.
According to him, this collaboration will strengthen financial inclusion. “So the third reason BI issued a central bank digital currency which we call digital rupiah is because this is so we can continue to cooperate internationally,” said Perry.
